Closing Event:Charlotte Park and James Brooks: Of This Place                                      Featuring Fitzhugh Karol’s Brooks Park Pair

Sunday, October 5 at 3 pm

Springs, East Hampton, NY: To mark the closing of the exhibition Charlotte Park and James Brooks: Of This Place, The Leiber Collection, in partnership with Brooks-Park Arts and Nature Center, is pleased to present a special program highlighting the significance of endangered historic sites like the Brooks-Park Home & Studios through artistic interventions.

On Sunday, October 5, at 3:00 pm, visitors are invited to enjoy a final viewing of the exhibition along with a presentation of Brooks Park Pair, a sculptural work by Springs-based artist Fitzhugh Karol. Commissioned in 2023 by the Preservation League of New York State and inspired by Park and Brooks and their former home and studios, Karol’s carvings represent the collaborative life of this highly regarded artist couple.

Created from local cedar, the Brooks Park Pair reflects Karol’s signature approach to large-scale work in wood and steel, while paying homage to the iconic saw-tooth roofline of the Brooks Studio, designed by James Brooks in the late 1950s. The Brooks-Park Home & Studios, located on Neck Path and owned by the Town of East Hampton since 2013, was named to the Preservation League’s 2022–23 Seven to Save list of endangered historic sites.

The commission was made possible through a Capacity & Regrowth grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. Through the grant, the League commissioned various artistic interventions to bring attention to its Seven to Save endangered historic sites across New York state.

At 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 4th, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy a final look at the exhibition Of This Place and to view and discuss Brooks Park Pair by Fitzhugh Karol in the context of bringing attention to the Brooks-Park Home & Studios historic site.
